Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is one of the world’s oldest forms of health care. It is rich and diverse with a long history, but also ever-evolving as contemporary scholars conduct new research.

What is the basis of acupuncture?

The body contains a network of energy pathways known as meridians. Numerous acupuncture points are located along these meridians at very precise locations. Each point may perform specific actions or jobs. By stimulating these points with very fine needles and other techniques, we encourage them to carry out their actions, and restore balance. The points and techniques that we choose for each treatment are completely individual to you.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Technically, acupuncture is just one tool in a system known as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Therefore, when you come for an acupuncture treatment at Moxa, you may also experience various other adjunctive techniques such as:

  • Moxibustion — applying therapeutic heat by burning the mugwort herb to acupuncture points or areas of certain types of pain
  • Cupping — using special ‘cups’ to create gentle suction to draw up and hold the skin and superficial muscles inside the cup. The technique is quite similar to massage. It may increase circulation, and is most often used to treat muscle tightness and pain
  • Gua Sha — scraping the skin with a Chinese soup spoon or similar smooth device. It is often used in the management of pain and stiffness
  • Massage
  • Chinese dietetic and lifestyle advice
  • Chinese herbal medicine.

We also offer Shiatsu massage in our TCM suite of services.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts provide treatment protocols for hundreds of physical and emotional complaints.

TCM views you as a complete, interconnected being. An imbalance in one aspect of your health may often suggest other imbalances or issues, which a TCM practitioner is trained to expect and look for. Therefore, you can often be treated for more than one thing at a time including a range of symptoms like pain, stress and fatigue.

Hygiene protocols

We follow strict hygiene protocols at Moxa and use only single-use needles. The needles we use in your acupuncture treatment are opened from sterile packaging and disposed of in sharps containers at the end of your treatment.

No pain

Acupuncture is not painful as such. Sometimes you will certainly feel strong sensations but, mostly, the overwhelming sense is of peace and relaxation. Many people even fall asleep!

Chinese Medicine is generally considered to be safe, but occasionally, as with all health treatments, may be associated with possible adverse reactions in individual cases.

Jodi Baldry, our resident acupuncturist, enjoys treating a wide array of general health concerns and is happy to give you honest advice about whether TCM may be an appropriate treatment choice for you.
